Content preview: Your puppy at 7 months old Hi Helen, Your puppy is now entering the second half of the most important year of their life. Continue to reinforce positive behaviours and correct any negative behaviours as you go along as your puppy is rapidly maturing into a wise and loyal companion, and is well on the way to leaving behind some of their more destructive impulses in favour of becoming your best friend. Your puppy's brain is still growing and developing and you'll want to stimulate them by taking your puppy to new places to introduce new people, dogs and also new experiences. This is a great time to start taking your puppy on longer trips as most pups can hold their bladder for a longer car ride at this age, although for some dogs the excitement of the car ride can be a bit too much! Make sure your puppy is appropriately secured during a car trip. Dogs can be injured in car accidents as easily as people and there are plenty of dog harnesses and other restraints available for just this purpose to keep you safe by avoiding unwanted distractions and unwelcome paws on the pedals or steering wheel! At 7 months old, and especially if your puppy has been desexed, you're likely to notice your puppy starting to become a more calm and easy-going dog but don't panic if they still are as excitable as usual as the process from excitable puppy to a much more calm adult normally takes an extended period of time. If your male puppy has not been desexed yet, you may notice early symptoms of the alpha male syndrome where they will behave aggressively or possessively around toys, food, or other people. If your puppy becomes too rough and assertive during play, stop playing the game and give him a little time out. Encourage your puppy to play nicely, and eventually your puppy will learn that macho behaviour will get him nowhere at home. By 7 months of age the permanent molar teeth will be present in most breeds and they will come to the end of actively "teething". Chewing may peak at this stage but make sure they have safe and approved chew toys as they will still have a high desire than normal to chew over the next few months and now is a great time to invest in some great interactive chew toys. Most 7 month old pups are about 80% of their adult body weight by now, but there is a range of maturity between the different breeds with smaller breeds maturing faster than larger breeds of dog. You may have noticed some changes in your puppy's coat as they develop their adult coat. Most puppies will shed some of their puppy coat (even the low or non-shedding breeds). Get your dog used to being brushed while they are young and make it a positive experience. Your puppy's body type will start to appear much more like an adult at this stage as they slow down in height and length and begin to fill out with developing muscle. During this age and over the next couple of months they go though an "awkward teenage" stage just as we all did, where they look a little out of proportion until everything catches up! Here's what your 7 month old puppy will need to have done: * Heartworm treatment * Frontline flea treatment Here's what you will need to do: * Apply the Frontline flea treatment to your puppy * Treat your puppy for heartworm Find a local obedience club or trainer to start taking your puppy to. The puppy school that helped with the socialisation of your puppy will probably be able to assist you with this. Teaching your puppy how to lie down Teaching your dog to lie down on command is important as it is one of the control commands and helps to establish to your dog that you are in control and are dominant over him. This is also a useful position to have your dog in when you take your dog out with you, as when she is lying down, she cannot jump up onto the table, beg for food or chase other dogs which may also be in the same venue as you and your dog. If you plan to take your dog out to outdoor restaurants or cafes that allow dogs, a dog in the Down position at the table makes for a welcome guest. Teaching the "lay" command: * Start your dog in the sit position. * Give the cue "down", "drop" or "lay" (only one of these words) * Hold a piece of your dog's favourite treat between your thumb and first finger a couple of centimetres in front of your dog's nose so they know it's there and can smell it. * Slowly move the treat straight down to the floor so it is touching the ground between your dog's legs but hold the treat with your fingers. * Your dog will follow the treat with his head and will bend his neck until he needs to bring his head down to continue to follow the treat to the floor. * Draw the treat away from him along the floor in a straight line. * Repeat the cue that you used earlier. * When he brings his legs out in front of him and his belly touches the floor, give him the treat and heap on the praise. * Repeat the process for the next 5 to 10 minutes and end the training session there. * Try to practice this new command for at least 5 minutes per day for the next 2 weeks to make sure that your dog remembers this command. Your dog will also associate the hand signal of your thumb and first finger brought together and pointing to the floor as the signal for "down". * It may be helpful to use the word "drop" rather than "down" as the cue to avoid confusing your dog between down on the floor and saying down when your dog jumps up on you. If your dog has trouble laying down when you draw the food out along the ground in front of him, you can try to place a collar and lead on your dog and gently encourage him to lie down that way. Another technique you can try is to sit on the ground in front of your dog with your legs bent across the front of your dog at a 90 degree angle, so when you draw the treat along the ground your dog must go under your knees to get the treat. A good way to keep up your dog's skills with all their commands is to make them sit, stay, lie down etc before every meal, before and after every play session, and pretty much every time they want to do something fun for them. This will help to reinforce that they must first listen to what you want from them and give it to you, for them to do what they want. www.chevromist.com Ph: (03) 8360 7562 Chevromist Kennels, Unit 5, 16-17 Hammer Court, Hoppers Crossing Victoria 3= 029, AUSTRALIA To unsubscribe or change subscriber options visit: http://www.aweber.com/z/r/?TOyMHBzMbLRsjCysbJws7LRmtIysLBwMTMzs --===============7250377805565790241== Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="utf-8" <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <title>Your puppy at 7 months old</title> <style type=3D"text/css"> a { color: #2899D7; } .body {padding:20px; font-size: 12px;} .headline {font-size: 20px; color:#3aa5e0; padding-botto= m:10px;} .article {padding-bottom:20px;} .coupon {padding-bottom:20px;} body {max-width:600px; margin:auto; } td {cellpadding:0px; border-spacing:0px;} tr {cellpadding:0px; border-spacing:0px;} table {max-width:600px!important; border-spacing:0!importan= t; border:none; } .containerbox {width:100%; max-width:600px!important; font-family:"= HelveticaNeue-Light", "Helvetica Neue Light", "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, = Arial, "Lucida Grande", sans-serif;} img {height:auto; max-height:auto; max-width:100%;} .share img {width:20px!important;height:auto!important;display:i= nline-block;} .headline {padding:0px; font-size:30px;} @media only screen and (min-width:10px) and (max-width: 400px) { .containerbox {width:300px!important; max-width:300px!important; m= argin:0 auto!important; clear:both!important;} table {width:100%;} .headline {font-size:20px;} .paragraph {font-size:16px;} } </style> </head> <body> <center> <div align=3D"center"><div class=3D"containerbox" style=3D"background-color= : rgb(255, 255, 255); width: 100%; max-width: 600px; font-family: "Hel= veticaNeue-Light","Helvetica Neue Light","Helvetica Neu= e",Helvetica,Arial,"Lucida Grande",sans-serif;"> <center> = = <!--[if !mso]><!--><table style=3D"max-width: 600px; width: 100%; border-sp= acing: 0px; border-width: medium; border-style: none;" bgcolor=3D"#ffffff" = cellpadding=3D"0" cellspacing=3D"0"><!--<![endif]--> <!--[if gte mso 9]><table width=3D"600" bgcolor=3D"#ffffff" cellpadding=3D"= 0" cellspacing=3D"0"><![endif]--> <tbody><tr style=3D"border-spacing: 0px;"> <td style=3D"background-repeat: repeat-y; border-spacing: 0px;" backgroun= d=3D"https://www.aweber.com/images/email-templates/pets/blue/sidebar.png" b= gcolor=3D"#ffffff" width=3D"23%"></td> <td style=3D"padding: 20px; font-size: 12px; border-spacing: 0px;" class= =3D"body" valign=3D"top"><div class=3D"region"><div aw-contents=3D"1"><tabl= e class=3D"row" style=3D"width: 100%; max-width: 600px; border-spacing: 0px= ; border-width: medium; border-style: none;"><tbody><tr style=3D"border-spa= cing: 0px;" aw-contents=3D"1"><td style=3D"width: auto; border-spacing: 0px= ;" aw-attributes=3D"width, valign" class=3D"container" aw-contents=3D"1" va= lign=3D"top" width=3D"auto"><div class=3D"definition-parent"><table style=3D"max-width: 600px; border-spacing: 0px; border-width: medium; borde= r-style: none;" class=3D"headline-element" border=3D"0" cellpadding=3D"0" c= ellspacing=3D"0" width=3D"100%"> <tbody><tr style=3D"border-spacing: 0px;"> <td class=3D"headline" style=3D"padding: 0px; font-size: 30px; color: rg= b(58, 165, 224); border-spacing: 0px;"><div aw-variable=3D"value"><div styl= e=3D"text-align: center;"><b><span class=3D"" style=3D"color: rgb(8, 7, 8);= font-size: 28px;">Your puppy at 7 months old</span></b></div></div></td> </tr> </tbody></table></div><div class=3D"definition-parent"><div class=3D"paragr= aph" style=3D"padding-bottom: 12px;"><div aw-variable=3D"value"><div style= =3D"text-align: justify;"><span class=3D"" style=3D"color: rgb(8, 7, 8); fo= nt-size: 16px;">Hi </span><span class=3D"" style=3D"color: rgb(8, 7, 8= ); font-size: 16px;">Helen,</span></div><div> <p style=3D"text-align: just= ify;"></p><p></p><p><span class=3D"" style=3D"font-size: 16px; color: rgb(5= , 5, 5);">Your puppy is now entering the second half of the most important year of their life.
